planingTHE SPCF STORY

In 1970, a group of men met at the World Convention of Christian Churches in Adelaide, Australia. These men, from America, Australia, and New Zealand, realised that there was a severe lack of independent Christian Churches in the South Pacific region. They also noted that among the churches that did exist, many were not stable enough to provide teaching that was contemporary and biblically sound.

As a result, 15 of these men formed South Pacific Christian Fellowship. Their main goal was to provide well-trained preachers to existing churches in Australia and New Zealand, whenever needed. Secondly, they also wanted to send consultants who could provide encouragement and direction to struggling churches. Lastly, they wanted to help restore the principals of Restoration Movement heritage. SPCF continued this form of ministry in the South Pacific for 20 years.

In the mid-1990s, SPCF believed that they needed a new and fresh approach to ministry in the South Pacific. Therefore, they decided work toward the establishment of a new church in a large metropolitan area of New Zealand's largest city, Auckland. So in 1997 three American couples were sent to begin Shore Community Christian Church.

Following the success of this church plant, SPCF adopted church planting as a driving factor for doing ministry in New Zealand. The purpose of SPCf is to establish church planting churches.

The future is bright for SPCF.

Who Are the Christian Churches?

The churches planted by SPCF relationally connected to a movement of churches called the Independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ.  This Christian Church fellowship in the USA is made up of over 5,000 independent churches, linked by common cause and vision.  They operate three seminaries, over twenty Christian colleges, and numerous missions agencies and benevolent ministries.

According to the recent Glen Mary Study, the Independent Christian Churches were the fastest growing Christian fellowship in America (of groups over one million in size) during the decade of the 1990s.  They experienced 18.5% growth during the decade.  Much of that growth was in new churches and mega-churches (churches over 2,000 in size), where the Christian Churches have been one of the leading Christian fellowships.

The churches tend to be marked by their focus on meeting a broad base of needs in the communities in which they serve.  They also have a desire teaching the truth of the Bible in a relevant way for today.
